Introduction
- Access to safe water is essential for addressing poverty and health problems.
- Rural areas have limited access to clean water for domestic use, crop production and adequate sanitation.
- Economical benefits are achievable indirectly through improved health and time saved from the drudgery of carrying water over-long distances.
- Existing data on the incident of water-borne, water- related and water washed diseases indicate that these are more prevalent where people use contaminated water and have little water for daily use.
- Such diseases account for over half of the diseases affecting the population and more than 80 percent of Tanzania’s population living in rural areas.
- By far, our major achievements are in providing water to urban and rural communities.
- Clean water still scarce to many people in this country.
- It is a common sight for a woman to walk several miles daily to fetch a bucket of water. Some areas have access to water from hand dug holes and contaminated streams and puddles.
Activities – Give Water To The Thirsty Project
Kerbala Shallow Well Project: WIPAHS has dug over 300 shallow wells in Dar es Salaam and other regions with each well costing approximately US $ 1500 and provides approximately 2500 litres of drinkable water daily for 400 families and is expected to last for approximately 10 years.
Ashura Shallow Well Project: WIPAHS has dug nearly 200 bore holes, each with a capacity of around 3000 to 15000 litres of water per hour and it costs between US$ 6,000 to US$ 8,000 depending on the survey.
